As I look back, I understand what [the record company] was getting at. They were trying to market a record and make it as commercially acceptable as possible. It hurt me and my credibility with critics.
If I remember, Russia, 20 or 30 years ago, you'd get shot trying to leave. Today, Russian tourists are all over the world. You have Russian oligarchs with big yachts all over the world.
I'm trying to change the culture in New York City; that's hard enough!
People have no confidence that Washington, both sides of aisle, are coming together to try and do what's right for the economy.
For me, I try to look at a person's swagger and a little background on them if I already haven't liked them as a ballplayer. All you have to do in the way I am going at it is that I don't attack them like a typical commentator or a typical interview where I am trying to figure out what's your statistics or how you felt about last night? Those things. My things are more lifestyle oriented.
I wanted to build something that was a system - that was mechanical and would propagate itself like a virus. I needed a way for it spread from person to person, and the best way to do that was trying to get someone to get their friends to sign up.
A lot of times, you design a logo to be timeless, but with something like the Olympics, timelessness is maybe not something you should be going for. Maybe you should be trying to come up with something that will really become associated with a moment in time, a few weeks, that happened, period. Then you look back, think about it and connect it with that time. It may look dated later but it will be still be evocative.
A lot of it was, you know, you look for moments where, for instance, we were dependent on Abraham Lincoln making sure that the slaves were freed or John Kennedy bringing civil rights, or the first one I wrote about, George Washington trying to stop the British from invading and ending this country before it even began. Those were turning points where, if you had not had a president stepping up to the plate, if there wasn't a story like that, we would not be here.
We cannot be spun, or at least we'd like to think that we cannot be. And the presidents who are trying to - too overtly to try to say, here is what you historians and what you later Americans should think of my presidency, 30 or 40 years later, they look silly.
Differentiate your products, provide great service and don't even think about trying to compete with Wal-Mart on Price.
I've always been a fan of AXE and when I heard about their new product and they sent it out to me for me to try and smell and I was like, oh man. It's hard for me to talk about something I don't care about or I'm not really into but once I tried it out for myself I was like, wow okay I can get into this [ collaboration].
Acting for me sometimes is taking whatever personal experiences I have and try to apply that [to a role].
I'm not sure I ever try to make a case for the music. I mean, sometimes the music isn't even that good. I just tell the band's stories; if I describe the music, it's to explain how it moved the overall story along.
I always try to find the truth in a situation. That unvarnished, pure nugget of truth at the core of every issue that I write about.
It drives me crazy when people say, "All we're trying to do is create entertainment." I feel like people go to movies for more than that.
I think my desire to imagine a future for this site came out of trying to come to terms with the emotions that day aroused.
I think the movies that don't try to please people are movies that you respect more in the end.
I try to not let there be too many steps between what I am mostly focusing on and what I am physically doing. If you are constantly standing back and looking at the whole map, you are going to miss a lot of turns and feel overwhelmed.
Try to understand long before you move to judgment.
It's Sanjit. It's a Hindu name. It means 'invincible.'" "That's great," Lana said. "Invincible. I can't be vinced." "That's not even a word," Lana said. "Go ahead: try to vince me," Sanjit said.
I'm at a point where I let my mind go with flow of the music I'm making and it's not interrupted by me trying to please everybody.
I always try and learn as much as I can from different departments on a film set.
I get restless easily so I always want to keep working, but I am trying to pace it as well.
I really like trying to find the roles that are actually really meaningful to me.
I just try to tell a story with a song, and be able to try to transmit the emotion to you. That's all I'm really trying to do.
