And to me, that is the greatest danger, that people start questioning basic facts and start not understanding the importance of democratic institutions such as the free press. I mean, to call the press the enemy is dangerous and just remarkably bizarre. The press is the only profession protected in the Constitution because of how important the framers viewed the press. But in authoritarian regimes, they control the press. And to me, going down an authoritarian path is the greatest danger that we face as a republic.

Most of the time I wind up with a sleepily mumbled melodic line, sometimes with words, sometimes not. But then with my waking brain I have to decide whether it's worth...I mean, sometimes it's not worth it.

For a while the creative writing community sort of sprung out of places like Iowa and Syracuse. The graduates sort of went out, and they would found creative writing departments in the little colleges where they went, and then some of those would found other ones. I mean every college has got a creative writing department, so where are the jobs coming from? There are not any jobs out there.

I had in effect been thrown out of graduate school because I was a lousy graduate student, and I had to find a job, and I took the first job that came along. It happened to be a management trainee job in a life insurance company, and I just stayed. It was always, mainly, the idea was that I would support myself as a writer, and I knew I would have to have some sort of work, and it didn't make a whole lot of difference to me what it was. I mean, I could have been a paper hanger or something for that matter.

What I want is for people to be treated better, to be paid better, and when you start doing something simple , it forces your price point up, which means that you have to produce a higher quality product in order to justify that.

The pleasure of nonfiction is that it takes all of that sort of artistic and observational skill, but then there's a more intellectual layer on top of it: it's not enough to make us see things in new ways, we have to try to figure out what that means for the way we live.

The anger on the left - I've never seen anything like it. I mean, they're right now opposing everything. Democrats in the Senate are filibustering absolutely everything.

The left keeps talking about impeachment. I mean, they were talking about impeachment before Donald Trump's inauguration in 2017. And, you know, I think impeaching Obama in January probably would have been a mistake.

I'm not going to play pundit on Donald Trump and criticize him. I will say the media's treatment of that illustrates a very, very different - I mean, it dominated the news for a week to 10 days once he was the nominee. In the primary, it didn't get, seemingly, even 30 seconds of news.
